Pier to Pier

public works

public works built a temporary river and model pier in Pier Parade to mobilise the memory of, and connection with, the River Thames. The mirror of water was a paddling pool, boating pond, and site for civic games developed with members of Fight For Peace.

We met people who in their youth would dive off the pier to swim or use the river water to wash cars for some extra pocket money. In their memory the Thames was an active public realm central to North Woolwich. Reconnecting the place back to the river and all it stands for seems crucial in a time where more and more people feel removed not only from the river but also from the community they live in.
