Bleeding Lingo

John Costi

For Cally Calls John was paired with a local café owner. Bleeding Lingo considered the street subculture that musters in the cafe and recognised uniform as an important tool of social status. It brought together John’s own ‘Ralphy’ clothes collection with information about Ralph Lauren lifted from Wikipedia, a film constructed from found audio and audio that connected two groups of people on opposite sides of the Atlantic - the Lo-Life’s of Brooklyn, New York and the Cally Bangers of Islington, and the performative painting of a gang logo.

John was commissioned as part of Cally Calls a partnership project with Team Cally in 2013 supported by CreativeWorks. He graduated from Central Saint Martins BA Fine Art in 2013.
