Building the Fetish

Dean Kenning

As office workers hurried to work across Granary Square a large plinth was rapidly constructed across their route by six people in green t-shirts with ‘value’ emblazoned on the front. A forklift truck deposited three tons dirt excavated from one of the nearby construction sites. Over the next six hours a model of the Kings Cross development was constructed. The builders conversed with passers-by, referring them to an informational map pasted to the surface of the plinth, and explaining that the relative height of their lumpy mud towers were calculated on annual estimates of the ‘value’ producing power of the buildings and sites they represented.

Dean was commissioned in 2015 as part of Unannounced Acts of Publicness with support from Argent.
